Wistar Institute, Philadelphia, PA
The Challenge
The Wistar Institute, an independent nonprofit biomedical research center, was building a major new addition at its University City facility. Plans called for knocking down less than a third of its existing 103,750-square-foot cancer research building and vivarium at 36th and Spruce streets and constructing a new seven-story research tower. Ballinger is the current architect. Wistar is on the University of Pennsylvania campus, but is independent of the school and not affiliated with it. The Center wanted a coating system to prevent migration of any vivarium odors up to the building above, that was fire-resistant, 0 VOC, seamless and long-lasting.
