The Coin Test
Curious what OxiGuard can do for your application?
The objective of the test was to show the photocatalytic activity and oxidative power of the photo-catalyst when exposed to sunlight (UV light). The photocatalyst was first applied to one of the tiles surface and allowed to dry. The second step was to apply a water-based organic ink on top of the photocatalyst and to the uncoated tile. The tiles were then placed outside and a penny was placed in the center of the tile.

The test was designed to show the difference in the areas exposed to UV light versus the area underneath the coin that was not exposed to light. The test shows the range of photocatalytic activity over a 40 minute period. In fact, one can see the difference after even 10 and then 20 minutes.

The results are dramatic after 40 minutes. The tile which has had only the water-based ink and no photocatalyst applied to the surface, with a coin placed in the center exhibited no discernable difference in color before and after the test. The tile coated with the photocatalyst and water-based ink shows consistent oxidation of the water-based ink over the 40 minute period. At the end of the 40 minute period there is no water-based ink visible to the naked eye except for the area under the coin which had been placed in the center of the tile at the start of the test. This test shows the oxidative power of the photocatalyst when exposed to UV light.

ECI Product Application
| Application Guidelines for TiO2 Thin Films |
1. Coating of substrates:
- ECI Environmental Coatings Inc. recommends the highest quality equipment for application of our products. Our team will gladly assist you with the Equipment Specifications and Pricing Information.
- Clean the surface of the substrate on which the coating is going to be applied. Avoid cleaning products containing ammonia as this can cause a disruption in the PH balance of OxiShield and OxiGuard.
- Clean the cup of the spray gun with pure (distilled) water prior to filling either with OxiShield or OxiGuard.
- Coating motion: The key is to finish evenly. Hold the gun steadily while moving the gun from left to right, ideally maintaining the distance from the nozzle to the surface of the substrate in a consistent manner while maintaining a smooth and consistent speed.
- It is recommended to apply both OxiShield and OxiGuard as thinly as possible for each pass. For best results it is recommended to apply both OxiShield and OxiGuard in two layers. Under normal conditions OxiShield will dry within a minute or two.
- Upon changing the solution from OxiShield to OxiGuard, make certain that the cup is rinsed thoroughly with pure (distilled) water.
- To visually inspect the evenness, view the coated surface from an oblique angle.
- Improving one’s skill of application of the coating requires practice. It is advisable to practice with water type ink, spraying on paperboard, glass and concrete block. Experience shows that the average painter/sprayer tends to apply the coatings in excess of recommended film requirements, as they are used to high viscosity liquids and therefore higher film build.
|
2. Curing:
It is recommended that the coating film be left for 8 hours untouched. The exposure to the sun light or to UV light will speed up the curing of the TiO2 film, strengthening the adhesion of primer to the substrate. Any variances in cure time, or set up time is fully dependent upon the skill of the applicator. All round-shaped or curved items are always difficult surfaces for even coating. Care should be taken to apply coatings as evenly as possible. |
3. Standard consumption rate of solution:
OxiShield: 10 gr/m2
OxiGuard: 7gr/m2
This consumption rate is the norm for coating over a painted surface.
For bare concrete, ceramic tiles, or porous materials, the rate of the consumption is naturally higher than the above stated coverage rates. |
